Via Lance Axt, The National Audio Theater Festivals (NATF) has exciting news for us:
We can officially announce an event taking place in Los Angeles, CA on April 30 at 7pm sharp:
A special presention honoring the first recipient of the Norman Corwin Award for Excellence in Audio Theatre: Norman Corwin himself.
For those of you who dont know, Corwin is considered the first poet laureate of radio (not to mention an NATF Advisory Board Member), the author, director, and producer of some of radio’s greatest dramas from the 30s, 40s, and even new programs for NPR in the 1990s:
On May 3, he will turn 100 years old. And the NATF will celebrate his work with an intimate award ceremony at the Falcon Theatre in Burbank, CA .
Norman Corwin has recently spoken to Richard and Norman loves the idea of it, so much so that he will make a rare public appearance at the show.
Why does he love the idea?
Because The Corwin goes beyond Norman, honoring, once a year every year, an audio artist (or group) who has contributed 20 or more years to furthering the medium. Already we have a LONNGGG list of future candidates!
The intimate ceremony will feature live and recorded tributes and a revised version of his audio play Between Americans, directed by Richard Fish. Two of our hosts will be Phil Proctor of the Firesign Theatre and his wife, actress/director Melinda Peterson, with more celeb names to follow. At $100 $200 a ticket, all proceeds from the evening will benefit the NATF.
Its such an exciting and rare event that Im about one frequent flier mile call from going out to Los Angeles myself to see it& It will be a rare and extraordinary evening!
NATF also needs your help to raise a matching grant of $10,000 by February 27, 2010 . You can hit the PayPal donation button below to make a donation for the Norman Corwin Award ceremony. Any amount that you can donate will go a long way!
As details and the date get closer, well fill you in on more details, and let you know of our own Norman Corwin radio celebration!

3 FebRadio Drama Revival wants to offer huge congratulations to Yuri Rasovsky and Roger Gregg for achieving nominations for two separate, yet equally big awards.
Yuri Rasovskys The Maltese Falcon was nominated for a Grammy for Best Spoken Word Album, an enormous accomplishment for an audio drama.
And jeez, if you havent listened to The Maltese Falcon yet, do! I raved about it in a review I did a few months ago because it deserved it, and much more. Its one of the best audio mysteries youll hear.
While the actual award went to Michael J. Foxs, Always Looking Up, lets congratulate Yuri again for bringing audio drama to a major awards night.
Our compatriot across the sea, Roger Gregg, has been nominted for his countrys Irish Times Theatre Award for Best Sound Design for his work in Barrabbas Theatres Johnny Patterson: The Singing Irish Clown.
While this doesnt honor his radio drama work directly, his sound design is, of course, a direct byproduct of his excellent work in audio drama and the nomination is a huge honor.
Not being from Ireland, I asked Roger what these awards were about. He simply put, in Ireland these are THE Awards. The only ones that matter when it comes to professional theatre.
Congratulations again Roger and Yuri, its a great day for audio drama when two of our own get the recognition they deserve!

29 Jan[Darker Projects Science Fiction Audio]This week we feature the work of Darker Projects, purveyors of audio drama of a darker shade.
And do they deliver! With more than a dozen podcasts covering werewolves, vampires, zombies, aliens, and much more, head over to their website to sate your taste for darkness.
Todays double feature comes from their series of short original sci-fi, Dark Matter.
We hear the story of a society that refuses to accept an alternative view of mankind in The Specimen, then of a crew who has traveled outer space, only to learn that the greatest dangers they face are human alone, in Heroes.

22 Jan[Great Northern Audio Theater]This week, we feature the live Mark Time Award Radio Show from CONvergence 2009, put on by our friends, the Great Northern Audio Theater.
I was behind-the-scenes on this show and got an opportunity to speak with GNATs Brian Price, Jerry Stearns, and Kris Markman you can listen to that interview on episode 130.
So, for the show itself, we dont hear anything about Haiti, terrorists, or swing votes in the senate. Instead, we answer the pressing age-old question: What DID the orc get on his SATs?
